Sun Bear Description
The Sun Bear is one of the 8 species of the Ursidae family. The other bear species are the:
- American Black Bear
- Asiatic Black Bear
- Brown Bear
- Giant Panda
- Sloth Bear
- Spectacled Bear
- Polar Bear.
The Sun Bear, Asiatic Black Bear and Sloth Bear all have black fur, with different distinctive (special) markings:
- The Sun Bear has an orange-yellow circle stretching under its chin down onto its chest.
- The Asiatic Black Bear has a white crescent (half moon) on its chest. Because of this it is also called the Moon Bear.
- The Sloth Bear has a white U shape on its chest and a lighter coloured snout than the Asiatic Black Bear.
The Sun Bear’s closest relative is the Asiatic Black Bear. Many people group them together, calling them the Sun Bear and Moon Bear.
Some people say the Sun Bear got its name because the circle on its chest looks like the rising sun.
