Meeting Tillie Jackson
“Hi Tillie. This is my cousin Megan and her friends Brad, Linda and Ben.” |
“Ah, the Australians. Help yourself to sodas from the fridge while I get you some donuts.” |
“Could I try a chocolate one with custard please?” |
“Sure can, honey. I love your accent and the colour of your hair. Mine used to be red like that before it faded." |
"Let's sit at the counter and eat." |
“I hope you’re enjoying your visit, but don’t spend all your time on Laura’s little mystery.” |
Megan is shocked and Tillie laughs.
“Don’t worry dear. Jean and I discuss everything. I know what you found in Jeremiah’s old store, Laura, and I know what you’re investigating. I like things the way they are around here, so don’t go stirring up trouble now.” |
“Thanks for the donuts Mrs Jackson. They were great. We’d better go and let you serve more customers.”
Laura and the detectives wipe their hands and throw their rubbish in the bin, then head off through the tables to the gift section.
Megan notices old photographs on the walls, showing a young Tillie with friends, riding a motorbike and swimming at the beach.
One photo catches her eye.
It shows people marching in the street at a demonstration, and young Tillie is there with the leaders.
Linda opens the shop door and Megan follows the others as they crowd outside. She wonders about Tillie Jackson and when and why she came to Mackenzie Wells.
