Old town to Tillie's Bakery
Still shaken by their narrow escape from the cellar, Laura and the detectives are standing in Jeremiah’s old store, trying to decide what to do.
Linda has an idea.
Laura locks the door of the old store behind them and they head back to the car. The air inside is stifling hot and they climb in slowly, trying not to burn their hands and legs on the door handles and upholstery.
The hot wind whips up another dust cloud as Laura drives out into the desert again.
After about fifteen minutes they enter the new town of MacKenzie Wells. Tillie’s Bakery and Gift Shop is a welcome sight.
The front part of the shop is filled with souvenirs and grocery items tourists might need.
At the back is the bakery, with donuts and other goodies in a long display case.
Coffee cups are laid out ready for thirsty customers.
Tillie Jackson is serving customers. She has long faded blond hair and is wearing brightly coloured beads with an apron over a long flowing skirt and blouse.
Megan thinks she looks like a hippy from the sixties.
Tillie sees Laura and smiles and waves to them to come over to the counter.
