The detectives and Laura toss around ideas, to confirm what they know
and plan what to do next.
"Jeremiah went to a lot of trouble – writing
his letter, making a map with clues, tearing it in half and hiding it in the Shaman's rattle - then putting the rattle in the tin box, and
hiding the box in the old store."
"We don’t know who he was hiding everything
from or why. Or where the other half of the map is."
"I think we should work on the map clue. If it does
lead to Ghost Mine we could see what secrets it holds."
"Does anyone use the mine now?"
"Yeah – several people including two
creepy guys, Bud and Elmore Morgan."
"We’ve already met those turkeys. They
gave us a hard time when we bought petrol."
"Elmore's OK. He's a bit slow, but gentle. Bud's
the mean one and Elmore follows his orders."
"Their savage dog, Ralph, tried to eat me."
"You were lucky. Brad tamed him and saved you."
"I'd hate to meet Bud on a dark night."
"Yeah - he's violent and aggressive. Most people
in town keep out of his way."
"Who owns Ghost Mine?"
"No-one really. It's a warren of small claims, owned
by several families from way back. Bud and Elmore Morgan inherited one
each."
"The Morgan brothers again. They're everywhere."
"They sure are. There's a sketch in mom's office
of how we think the claims are laid out. I'll get it."
Laura goes out across the courtyard to Aunt Jean's office, and comes
back with a rough, hand-drawn sketch.
