Ghost Mine Episode 10

Jeremiah the engineer

Under the right side of the rock they uncover a metal rail. Joined to it is a metal lever with broken pieces of wood, that may once have been handles.

	“It’s a mechanism. Jeremiah couldn’t have moved these rocks on his own, so he built this.”
	“He was a good engineer. It looks as if bits are missing, but it might still work.”
	“Let’s try pulling the rock on the right along the rail. Brad, pull at the top. Megs, pull in the middle and I’ll pull lower down. Laura, you push the lever. Be ready to jump back if the rock starts to fall.”
	“Oooh this is exciting!”
	"Linda, keep out of the way!"

Brad, Megs and Ben put their fingers into the crack and try to pull the rock towards them.

Laura kneels on the ground and pushes on the lever.

Nothing happens.

 

 

	“Stop, stop. This is not going to move easily. The mechanism’s too old.”
	“Don’t give up. Try again. We’re so close to getting inside!”
	“Okay. Get into position again – deep breath. Pull – and Laura, you push.”

Linda screeches as the crack widens. The mechanism groans and the huge rock slides over the rail.

They keep pulling and pushing until the muscles in their arms and legs feel on fire. Then with a loud crack the rock shudders to a stop and Brad, Megs and Ben fall over on top of each other.

Jeremiah’s rock entrance is open partway.
