People of the Legends
Indigenous People of North America - Navajo
Recent History
500 years ago the Navajo lived on their own lands and controlled how they lived as a Nation.
Their lives changed when European soldiers and settlers arrived, and they were badly affected by the fighting and wars that followed.
They were removed from their lands and many of them died from starvation and disease, or were killed. Eventually they were able to return home and live as a Nation again within the new United States of America.
The Navajo played an important part in defending the US in World War II. They used their language and skills to create a code for sending messages, which no-one could break. These were the Navajo Code Talkers.
Today the Navajo have the largest number of people of any Native American Nation. They are finding ways to preserve their culture and way of life as well as becoming leaders in modern life.
