People of the Legends
Indigenous People of North America
Scientists estimate that before Europeans invaded what is now North America, between 2 and 18 million indigenous people were living there.
We do not know how many groups or tribes there were at that time.
Today there are more than 550 tribes or nations that are recognised by the Federal American government. Each tribe has had to prove that they have lived as an organised group since 1900. Some tribes have not been able to prove this and are not recognised.
In the year 2000 the tribes or nations with the most people were Navajo, Cherokee, Choctaw, Sioux, Chippewa, Apache, Blackfeet, Iroquois and Pueblo.
I would like to tell you a little about the people whose legends I am sharing with you. On my travels I’ve tried to find out about their history, how they live, and their culture and customs.
