Life at Home
The four directions are important to Navajo people in daily life.
- Looking east is for thinking.
- Looking south is for planning.
- Looking west is for action and living.
- Looking north is for summing things up and evaluating (asking yourself how things went).
Life moves forward in a clockwise direction.
The 2000 census showed that 58% of Navajo families live on the Navajo Nation, in towns, on farms, or in remote areas. The rest of the Navajo live in towns and cities outside their lands.
Young people who live on the Navajo Nation may go to school there, or to schools and colleges outside.
Life is more traditional on the Navajo Nation for young people.
