Animal Facts - Bears
Biology
Bears are mammals. They have thick fur, they are warm-blooded and the females give birth to their young as babies, instead of laying eggs.
The Brown Bear and Polar Bear are the largest species and the Sun Bear is the smallest.
Scientists classify bears as carnivores, meaning they eat mostly meat. But many species eat plants, fish or insects and the giant panda eats mostly bamboo. Many species will eat whatever food is available.
Bears are large animals.
They have four short legs, a stubby tail, small round ears and forward facing eyes.
They move around on all four legs, but can get up on their hind or back legs as well.
When they walk they put the soles of their feet flat on the ground, like humans do.
Claws stick out from the fur around their feet. The claws are non-retractable, meaning the bears can’t pull their claws in.
