Dinner with Aunt Jean
After demolishing 3 tacos, Linda devours a second helping of desert as they sit sprawled in the
courtyard watching the Californian night sky.
Aunt Jean looks around at
them and coughs, nervously.

|
"I’m glad you’re all here. It’s
good to see you again – and I want you to have a good time.
So don’t take what I’m about to say the wrong way
please."
|

|
"Mom, you don’t need to spell it out."
|

|
"Yes I do. It’s important. Restoring
the old town means a lot to this family – and the town.
We need tourists to help us survive."
|

|
"It wouldn’t look good if one of the
founders was involved in something crooked, would it?"
|
 |
"Jeremiah helped start this town. He was the
first mayor and one of the first storekeepers. He helped people
if they were down on their luck and he helped build a sense of
community." |
 |
"But mom – what if he was involved in
something bad? We can’t ignore it." |
 |
"And what if he wasn’t? Old bits and
pieces from the past don’t prove anything – and they
can’t
be allowed to stop what we’re doing." |
 |
"We don’t want to cause any trouble,
or hurt Jeremiah’s memory. Maybe we can clear his name and
help the old town at the same time." |
 |
"You can investigate where the artifacts came from.
But don’t tell anyone what you’re doing. If you’re
asked, say you’re researching a school project. Understand?" |
The detectives promise to do as Aunt Jean asks. When she goes inside,
Brad asks Laura to fetch Jeremiah’s old box and the mysterious letter
and artifacts she found. The detectives can’t wait to see them.
