Nasty Bud Morgan

Bud paces up and down, glaring at Megan and laughing as she sobs.

After a few minutes Elmore gets up from his seat at the table, picks up a dusty-looking water bottle and squats down on the floor next to her.

 

	“You should drink."
	“You’re soft, Elmore. Don’t feel sorry for her. We only need her to get great-grandpa’s treasure back.”
	“Gerhard murdered Jeremiah!”
	“And if I don’t get what I want, you and your friends will get hurt. You had a taste of what our family can do, back in Australia.”
	“The car that tried to run me over?”
	“Yes, girlie. I told them to scare you, not kill you. You won’t be so lucky this time.”
	“I don’t care what you do to me. The others will get the treasure. They’ve got the other half of Jeremiah’s map.”
	“Have they now?”

Bud picks up an old gun from the table, and taps Elmore with it.

 

 

“Come on Elmore, we’ve got work to do. We know every inch of Jeremiah’s tunnels – we’ll find your friends and take the money from them after they’ve found it. While you lie here with the rats.”

Bud laughs and walks away. Elmore picks up the lantern and lumbers after him, leaving Megs alone and frightened in the dark again. She cries for a long time, wondering where the others are and what they are doing.
