Morgan family power
Elmore settles himself into a rickety, old chair while Bud paces around the small space.

She sweats even more and feels sick. Suddenly Bud thumps the table, making everything on it jump and clatter.

“The artifacts and bits weren’t the only things Jeremiah stole from Gerhard. He took his money too. When Gerhard came to America he brought a big gold nugget with him." |
“Gerhard stole that nugget in Australia.”
“Did he now? Good for him. Well, when the Civil War ended he was down South. He swapped the nugget for money from a bank robbery. He got ten times what the nugget was worth.” |
“He was a stupid thief!”
“He was clever, even though he couldn’t read and write. He came to California and stashed the money until the robbery was forgotten. Earned what he needed working this mine and selling bones.” |
“He was a grave-robber!”
“Jeremiah stole everything from him! Gerhard caught up with him and threw him down a mine shaft when he wouldn’t say where the money was.” |
Megs bursts into tears. Jeremiah died a horrible death, alone in the dark at the bottom of a mine shaft. She is sure now that she also won’t leave Ghost Mine alive.
