Indigenous People of North America - Papago (Tohono O'odham)

Oban the Knowledge KeeperOld photo of a Papago womanThe Papago are Sonoran Desert people.

Their lands once stretched from the northern Mexico state of Sonora, up over the US border to central Arizona near Phoenix, west to the Gulf of California and east to the San Pedro River near the town of Tombstone.

Today the Papago are called the Tohono O'odham Nation.

In land size, theirs is the second largest nation after the Navajo Nation. But the Tohono O'odham Nation's lands are split into four separate areas in the US State of Arizona and Mexico. There are about 28,000 Tohono O'odham people today.
