Indigenous People of North America - Tribes and Nations

Communicating with others

As part of organising and governing themselves, many nations have had to think about who they want to communicate with in the rest of the world, how they might do this, and for what reason.

Several nations are using technology like web sites and email to:

  • Give information to their own people
  • Present their history and culture to others
  • Promote tourism and attract visitors
  • Explain to visitors the rules they should follow and why
  • Make contact with indigenous groups in other countries
  • Work jointly with these groups on international projects.

Nations are also deciding how they want to interact (meet, or mix) in person with visitors and tourists. Some have built museums and cultural centres, and some are publishing books and materials for people to explore on the Internet.

Each year thousands of tourists come from overseas and within the United States, to visit and learn more about the Nations and their lands and cultures. Thousands more people visit their web sites every day.

By choosing how they organise, govern and communicate, the Nations are building lives for their people in the modern world.
