Force the trapdoor open
Laura and the detectives huddle together, trying not to panic. Then Ben shines his flashlight slowly around the cellar.
In one of the dark corners is a pile of wood and paint tins, and some long posts.
He moves closer and the others follow him.

"One of these posts could do the trick. If we push on it at the edge of the trap door, while pushing against the middle of the door, we might be able to counter the force that’s pushing down from above.” |

“For once even I know what you’re getting at. Shoving a post under the door while shoving directly against it might move it." |
Ben gives Linda the flashlight while he sorts through the posts, then pulls one out of the pile and holds it up.

“This looks the right length.” |

“Okay, Brad and I will push against the trapdoor from the stairs while you three push the post against the edge of the door from down here. Give me the flashlight, Linda.” |
Megs and Brad climb the stairs and position themselves under the middle of the trapdoor.
Then Megs shines the light while the others maneuver the pole under the outer edge of the door with Brad’s help.

“We're ready down here.” |

“On the count of three. One, two, three.” |
Megs and Brad push off, pressing their backs into the door. Ben’s group pushes the pole upwards as hard as they can.
