Detectives with Mowaljarlai
The
night is warm and still. Danny gives Mowaljarlai the picture of the
skull and the artefact and Linda explains what they want to know. Mowaljarlai
listens in silence.
A soft breeze whistles through the trees. Mowaljarlai looks into the sky and watches the moving clouds. Megan and the others huddle closer.
A heavy feeling of sadness presses down on them and an eerie, ancient sound echoes inside their heads.
Then Mowaljarlai begins to whisper in his Koorie language – and
Danny translates.
“Loyoranna, the wind has spoken. Loyoranna says this is the skull of an Aboriginal warrier and this is his sacred bullroarer – Tjurunga.
The land cries out for its child. The spirits will not be at peace until he is back in the ground. He must be returned into the ground.
Our people ask if you will bring him home.”
The detectives look at each other and don’t know what to do
next. Danny leads them quietly back to his house – leaving Mowaljarlai
alone under the trees.
