Why the Eureka Stockade is important
When the miners’ protested about the licence system, and then fought at the Eureka Stockade, this was Australia’s first rebellion against the British government.
Men had come from all parts of the world to join the gold rush in Ballarat including California, Canada, Ireland, England, Scotland, Sweden, Italy and Jamaica. Most of them were poor and seeking a better life. Some were politically active in their own countries and wanted to see an end to British rule in Australia. They started the Ballarat Reform League, which was like an early political party.
The story of the Eureka Stockade is an important legend today, and the flag of the Southern Cross is still seen as a symbol for those struggling with authority.
