Classification of Deserts
Scientifically we classify deserts as “Hot deserts” and “Cold or Semi-deserts”.
Hot deserts
Hot deserts are hot during the day, all year round, with temperatures above 40oC (104oF). Nights are cold, with temperatures below 10oC (50oF), and sometimes below freezing point.
Some Hot deserts are:
- Sahara
- Kalahari
- Arabian
- Iranian
- Atacama
- Australian
- Sonoran
- Mojave
- Californian.
Cold deserts
Cold deserts have hot temperatures in summer and very cold winters. Some Cold deserts are:
- Great Basin in Western North America
- Patagonian
- Turkestan
- Gobi.
