Sun Bear Diet
Sun Bears are omnivores, meaning they eat both plant and animal food. They eat a wide variety of things including:
- Fruit
- Berries
- Roots
- Nuts
- Sprouts
- Tips of young palm trees
- Honey
- Bees
- Eggs
- Termites
- Lizards
- Small birds
- Cocoa
- Coconuts.
The bears can do a lot of damage to cocoa plantations and coconut palms when they forage for food there.
The bears have a very good sense of smell and poor eyesight, so they hunt using their noses to sniff out food.
They have a strong jaw for crushing and biting, and large front paws with long claws for tearing and digging.
They use their long tongue to suck honey from beehives and pull termites from nests.
They really like fruit and honey, and some people call them the honey bear.
